AERO has benefitted from Friedrichshafen as a cradle of aviation, which was established in 1900 by Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin and his famous Zeppelin airships, and strengthened by Hugo Eckener and Claude Dornier, founder of the famous aircraft manufacturer Dornier Werke.
In the 80s and 90s the booming UL industry grew the show further, led by composite innovations including those from Eastern Europe. In 1995, the Business Aviation section was introduced at AERO for the first time. In addition, the trade show significantly expanded its offerings in the areas of avionics, maintenance and aviation services in the following years.
The move to the new modern venue halls at the airport followed in 2002. AERO is one of the few trade fairs to have its own taxiway to the exhibition centre and an infrastructure allowing aircraft in every hall, which is still unique in Europe. The focus of the trade show on innovation in aviation and future topics has always driven the growth of AERO, making it the world's leading trade show for innovations in General Aviation.
The show is organised by the Fairnamic GmbH joint venture – founded in 2021 by the two exhibition companies Messe Frankfurt and Messe Friedrichshafen – which is highly specialised for innovative and future mobility.
